New to CrossFit and Afraid You Won’t Know Anyone? You’re Not the Only One Who Has Felt That Way
Walking into a gym for the first time is nerve-wracking. It’s a new environment, one you’re not safe in yet, and that feeling is completely normal. At CrossFit Never Forget, we know people are nervous before they ever set foot through the door, so we try to get ahead of it.
We typically get your name beforehand so we already know you’re coming. When you arrive, we greet you at the door and use your name. From there, you get introduced to your class ambassador, someone who will show you around the gym and stay by your side for the whole hour. You are not walking in blind and figuring it out alone.
Why the Class Format Does the Awkward Work for You
One of our gym rules is simple: introduce yourself to someone you don’t know. That’s not a suggestion, it’s part of how we operate. When a new person walks in, the ambassador introduces themselves, and then the members do too.
The reason this works is that our members remember exactly how it felt to walk in on their first day. They don’t need to be reminded to be welcoming. They genuinely want to make that new person feel like part of the crew from the moment they arrive, and they keep checking in and offering words of advice throughout the hour. The class format creates those natural touchpoints. You’re not left standing in a corner waiting for someone to notice you.
The Specific Moments When People Actually Start Talking
The interactions happen right away. People introduce themselves to any new person who walks through our doors. That’s not a policy we enforce awkwardly from the front desk. It’s just what our members do, because they care.
What makes CrossFit Never Forget different is that the people here will genuinely accept any new person from the moment they step inside. You don’t have to earn your way in over months of quiet attendance. You’re part of the group from day one, even if it takes a little time for that to fully sink in for you.
Why Smaller-City Gyms Like CrossFit Never Forget Close the Gap Faster
Our members see each other outside the gym too. They show up to support each other at events, support each other’s local businesses, and spend time together outside of class. In a place like Kokomo, those connections build quickly because the community is already tighter than people expect.
This isn’t just a gym. It’s a community, and that word gets used a lot in fitness, but here it means something specific. It means people who actually know each other, look out for each other, and show up for each other beyond the workout.
What the First Few Weeks Actually Look Like, Socially
Fitting in at CrossFit Never Forget comes down to one thing: accepting the community and accepting the people. We are a community-based gym, and we want every person who comes in to feel like they belong right away. That might look like a coach making a joke with you, getting shouted out at the whiteboard after a workout, or someone checking in on how you’re feeling after a tough class.
You will be sore. That part is honest. But you will also feel part of the community from day one, and those two things tend to happen at the same time.
When You Stop Feeling Like the New Person
You’ll notice it yourself when it happens. You start to have your go-to person or people in class, the ones you naturally drift toward when you walk in. You start talking to people not just during the workout but after it too.
The best sign, and the one that stands out most, is when people hang around in the athlete lounge after class. Not because they have to, but because they want to. Talking about the workout, talking about life, whatever the subject of the day happens to be. When you’re one of those people sitting there, you’re not the new person anymore.
A Few Things That Help You Settle In Sooner
Keep showing up. That’s the main one. The more you come in, the easier everything gets, including the social side of it. The hardest part is getting here, but once you walk through our doors, you won’t regret it.
If you’ve been thinking about trying CrossFit Never Forget and the social side has been holding you back, reach out and let us know you’re coming. We’ll make sure someone is ready to meet you at the door.
